Welcome to week for of the Color My World Challenge! So far, I’ve been challenged to incorporate yellow with décor (check out my Spray Painted Lamps) and with paint (and my Spray Painted Curtains and the Tutorial).
No, I didn’t spray paint anything this week. Instead, I was challenged to make a project out of fabric. I wanted to do something a little different than pillows (though I do still need to make a couple for the Guest Room). So I decided to revamp this vintage suitcase:
I bought it at a yard sale last fall for $5. The outside is in great condition, but the inside was super blah. Brown polyester just doesn’t do it for me.
I’ve always wanted to make a little “Guest Essentials” kit out of it.
Side note: I am possibly the worst packer in history. No matter how much I pack or for how short a trip, I WILL forget something… undies, socks, pajamas, contact lens case, contact solution, toothbrush, jewelry, SOMETHING. Never fails. My husband has even gotten into the habit of running through a quick list of commonly forgotten items as we pull out of the driveway. Doesn’t matter… I will still be missing something. So those are little things that I want to provide for my guests incase they are as terrible at packing as I am.
So I bought some super cute yellow ticking fabric from fabric.com and turned the suitcase into this:
I love how clean it looks inside and how the ticking stripe stay pretty true to the vintage feel. Plus the entire project took me less than an hour and $20. (2 yards of fabric and some new poster board as backing)
Here’s my new guest kit:
I included a blanket, 2 towels, and washcloths. Plus a little tray with toothpaste, extra toothbrush, contact lens case and a good book. There’s not a lot I can do about missing undies, but at least I can cover a few basics.
There you have it! I love it. Plus I bought extra fabric to make some pillows for the bed, so I’ll try to tackle that over the weekend and possibly have a reveal ready for you next week!
Next Tuesday is the link party so make sure you get your projects ready this weekend and be ready to link 'em up.

Great job. I think the ticking added the finishing touches to your suitcase. It's a great idea and one I certainly wouldn't have thought of. The ticking really adds a charming touch to it.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I love the yellow ticking, it really freshened up the inside of your vintage suitcase. Very creative use of fabric.
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought of this. What a fantastic idea! Turned out so cute.
ReplyDeleteCute! I did the same thing with teal fabric......
ReplyDeleteSo so cute! What a great idea and the ticking fabric really adds lots of charm to the suitcase. Your guest are so lucky!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love it when I can find a replacement for something forgotten w/out asking my host/ess.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a great hostess! I love how the ticking fabric has the same vintage feel as the suitcase. Speaking of bad packers, when I went to Vegas last week, I forgot to bring any pants! Who does that?!?!
ReplyDeleteI see a new interior to a vintage case in my possession in the hopefully not-too-distant future. Definite improvement and makes it more functional, too. Great storage for, say, an in-process scrapbook project or sewing or.....

ReplyDeleteI LOVE this little re-do!
What a neat idea! It does look vintage and cute! I almost always forgot something too, one time we forgot our entire bag of toiletries, for 6 ppl that is a lot of stuff to forget. ;)
ReplyDeletesuch a nice idea! I am infamous for forgetting everything when I travel. I usually have too many pairs of shoes and no toothbrush!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, this is so awesome! That yellow ticking is just perfect. What a fun little accessory for the guest room. You're so creative. :)

I need you to do this stuff around my house! New follower, would love a follow back :) http://sassyshoppperreviews.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI'm also a horrible packer. I'm trying to figure out what I am going to forget going to Costa Rica.....to a resort in the middle of nowhere. I'm so screwed.
ReplyDeleteI love your fabric choice and the idea of a guest essentials kit. Very smart!
That looks so great! My mom has always been great at re-making chairs (or anything with fabric). I can sew, but clothes only. If it is not wearable, I tend to freak out and feel like I can't handle it. This is so good! The new fabric really punches it up!

Just fantastic! I have several old suitcases waiting to be used for a travel-themed room and this is something I want to do. How did you attach the fabric?
ReplyDeleteIt looks so clean and tidy now. I have a vintage suitcase and a trunk that I need to do that to. How did you attach the fabric to the boards (did you use bristol board or foam-core board?) and how did you attach that to the suitcase. Your guests aren't going to want to leave.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up to Lovely Things Thursday...I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThat suitcase is beautiful. It's in such good condition. I love ticking fabric and yours makes for a very homey guest kit.
