A Tough Lesson

Don't forget to enter my current giveaway to Snake Oil Shop: Enter the Giveaway

Happy Monday! OK, so we have the valance back in place. BUT… I’m giving it a couple of days to make sure it stays where it’s supposed to and then I PROMISE I’ll post the tutorial. I just don’t want to tell yall how to do it and then keep having it fall off the wall. Doesn’t do a lot for my credibility.

You may remember that this time last year (oh wait, you wouldn’t remember that because I had like 27 followers at the time) so let’s try that again…
tobacco baskets
This time last year, my mom and I went thrifting in Asheville. We stopped at The Screen Door and before I even walked in, I saw an awesome tobacco basket hanging up outside for $18. I loved it immediately, but I was a complete idiot tried to be frugal and told myself that I don’t even know what I’d do with it and it’d probably sit in the garage for a year. Plus I can get one of these anywhere, right?
Tip: When thrifting, if you hear yourself saying the phrase “I can get one of these anywhere, right?” ... Immediately grab it and DO NOT leave the store without it.
Then over the past year, they’ve popped up EVERYWHERE, including…
Miss Mustard Seed:

and Southern Living:

Every time, it felt like the Tobacco Basket was taunting me. Of course, I immediately hated myself for passing it up. I spent the entire year drooling over these baskets. I even went to ebay and the cheapest one I could find was $100 with $50 shipping. I felt nauseous.

So, when we went back to Asheville in May, I was determined to find one and I was willing to pay up to $50-60 for it. I figured it was a hard lesson but I’ve been wanting one for a year and now I know exactly where I want to put it.

We went back to The Screen Door and as we drove up, I saw her. Hanging EXACTLY where she hung last year and waiting for me to come back to her. Only a little worse for wear after another year hanging out in the elements.

Plus, the owner let me have it for $15… see what a year will get you? $3 buckaroos in savings.
I snatched her up and gave her a little TLC at home (just a little wood conditioner and a coat of poly). And hung her up on the back of the fireplace in the sunroom:

In the future, I think I’ll just spend the extra $3. Now the only remaining question is… why did this take me 3 months to post? Because I’m just that organized and completely on top of this blogging thing.

  2. That is too funny. My uncle was a tobacco farmer back in the day in TN and last year I asked my dad to see if he had a tobacco basket ... no luck. I am totally envious of yours.

  3. Haha too funny that it was still there! (And great for you, of course!) I wouldn't have known to call ita tobacco basket. I am not versed in basket culture.

  6. My parents just bought one of those in Asheville and hung it over the fireplace mantle. They love it. My mom kept seeing these baskets around and they were all expensive except for this one that they found. Looks like you got another hidden gem!

  8. I don't think I've ever really noticed these before or even knew they were tobacco baskets??? I guess that's because I don't live in tobacco country :) I'm definitely going to be noticing these now, because they look great. I'm so glad you were able to get yours!

  13. Maury,

I love your tobacco basket and I do the SAME thing all the time. I still am regretting not buying this adorable tiny pin ball game that hung on the wall at an auction.

  14. Yep. I do it. all. the. time. I have no idea why? I guess it's because I'm cheap, and I always seem to talk myself out of things somehow!

So glad that your basket was there waiting for you a year later! That's fate for sure!!
